Bought it a while ago but certain visitors staying with us this weekend drove us to get it done. I blame you UnderSTeerEnthusiest and E90M3. Also, TorqueSteered helped me level it out so it’s very Oppo project.

It’s gorgeous. I love mid century modern.
Who was the designer again? I know my aunt just inherited a couple of his chairs, I’m just blanking on the name.

Thank you for not hanging your TV on the wall. Or is it?

That’s a well-decorated living room. How is the townhome lyfe?

We have good neighbors and the walls are decently thick. I’d love to be able to blast music or TV without caring but so far it’s a perfect starting point for us. My favorite part is our new kitchen.

That’s a great kitchen. Shaker faces, ladder/bar pull handles, dark toned cabinets. It’s crisp and won’t look outdated in 16 months like so many other trends...

As it should be. I never understood people who put their TV high up on a wall, or over a fireplace. You’d get a crick in your neck from watching it.

My wife is so happy you understand what a shaker face is haha. Thanks so much though. We put a lot of thought into it. A painful amount.

I’ve always liked it lower for sure. I was even worried this would be too high. I have a bad neck already haha.

The television is supposed to retract into the console!

I always tell customers that if you do it right the first time, you won’t have any regrets. When I’m with people looking to save 15 bucks on something that completely changes the look of a room, I always remind them that they’ll be looking at that choice every day for the remainder of their residency.

High mounted TVs drive me crazy. Especially above the fireplace, it’s just bizarre. I wall mounted mine, but just because I needed the space on top of the console for stereo gear. And yes I need to deal with the cables hanging from the TV...

See I was about to jump in and try and defend wall mounting a TV, As I did at my last house... but didn’t do in my new house.
But I have a friend who not only mounted his TV above his ridiculously high mantle but he actually went to the store with a measuring tape and deliberately got the biggest TV he could physically fit between the mantle and ceiling, and really is super annoying to try and watch anything at his house.
To be fair the reason we initially wall mounted our living room TV at our old house is because our entertainment center was very low and we had small kids. So I felt a lot safer with it up on the wall and out of their reach instead of just having it sitting on a piece of furniture. But it also wasn’t mounted very high up on the wall and all the wires were properly hidden.

I am not anti-wall mount, just anti-wall mount like you described. Ours is sitting on top of the Ikea TV stand we bought 15 years ago, and the TV is actually sitting on a bookshelf speaker to raise it above my poor-man’s surround sound. Here, a low wall mounting might actually work well, but I’m not going to drill holes in my wall. It’s no Southern Homes and Gardens arrangement, but then again, we’ve never been that big on formal looks. I’d love a larger screen, but this one fills the space perfectly, so I’ll save my money.

Honestly I probably would have ended up mounting the TV on the wall at our new house too. But my wife found a huge entertainment center for next to nothing right after we moved in and it just wouldn’t have made sense anymore with this behemoth. I’m just glad I didn’t lose the little feet for the TV.
But yeah we’re not fancy or anything I just dig clean and simple. The TV in my old house wasn’t really mounted much if any higher on the wall than yours or LexusGuy’s are sitting on your cabinets. Our entertainment center was just really low.
Also these photos are not at all indicative of how our house usually looks. The top one was taken just after assembling that huge entertainment center and the bottom was one of the photos that was posted in our house’s sale listing.

That looks awesome. I’m no designer but I think it works really well with everything else in that room. How old is that console? Is it a reproduction or a genuine vintage peice?
I would love to have some cool old mid-century furniture like that, but my kids are still too young and irresponsible for me to trust them around anything of value.

I think this piece is mid-50s. We got lucky and it had some minor fire damage where our friend who specializes in mid-century modern furniture sold it to us for cheap. Not the $5000 a perfect one is worth.

That’s not an entertainment center, it’s an edifice. And I’m guessing you don’t have kids...

That’s awewsome. I love finding screaming deals on stuff that just needs a little love. I don’t know what had to be done to repair it, but it looks fantastic now.

Get the low tech version

Yeah, and somehow it looks even larger and more imposing in person...
Honestly I don’t like it that much, but my wife does, and I have to admit the additional storage space is incredibly useful. Later I added some LED bias lighting behind the whole thing, so now at least it doesn’t look like a huge black hole on that side of the room anymore.
But yeah we actually have three kids... That’s the reason we had to move. Our old house was only 1000sqft, and it felt like it got smaller every day.

It’s a beautiful, classic piece. Nice selection. Mid century modern is the best modern.
